CCMS Shipping Insurance

Offer optional shipping insurance at checkout. This guide covers installing the plugin, setting your rates, how the price is worked out, and where to see what customers chose.

Install and Activate

  • Download the plugin ZIP
  • Go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the ZIP, and click Install Now
  • Click Activate. WooCommerce must be active first
  • Open WooCommerce → Shipping Insurance

What This Plugin Does and Does Not Do

It adds an optional fee to the order so customers can pay for the cost of covering their shipment. It does not sell or underwrite insurance. You buy the coverage from the carrier or a third-party insurer, and you handle any claim.

The rates it ships with are examples, not official carrier prices. Set them on the Carrier Rates tab to match what your coverage costs you.

Settings Tab

  • Label — the name customers see next to the choice, and the name of the fee in the cart and on orders
  • Default carrier — used when the chosen shipping method does not mention USPS, UPS or FedEx in its name
  • Starting choice — insurance is not added until the customer chooses it (recommended), or it is added by default and the customer can decline. Some regions, including the EU, do not allow a paid option to be pre-selected, so check the rules where you sell
  • Decline message — shown while the customer has insurance declined. Leave it empty to show nothing
  • Tax — treat the insurance fee as taxable or not
  • Where to show the choice — on the classic checkout: right after the shipping options (default), above the order total, or above the Place order button. The cart page keeps the choice after the shipping options. On the Cart and Checkout blocks: in the order summary under the totals (default) or with the shipping options
  • When to offer insurance — a minimum order value and a maximum insured value, measured on the items that ship. Outside the range there is no choice and no fee. Leave a box at 0 for no limit
  • Insurance terms — pick a published page that explains what the cover includes; a link to it is shown next to the choice, with link text you can edit

Carrier Rates Tab

Each carrier has its own pricing, based on the declared value: the value of the items that ship, before tax and shipping. Virtual and downloadable items are not counted. Choose a pricing method for each carrier: a rate table (described below), a percentage of the declared value, or a fixed amount per order. Every carrier also has an optional minimum and maximum charge, which only apply to insurance that has a charge, so a “No charge” band stays free.

  • USPS — a flat amount for each band up to $600 (to $50, $100, $200, $300, $400, $500, $600), then a charge for each additional $100 or part of $100 above $600
  • UPS — optional no charge up to $100, a flat amount from $100.01 to $300, then a charge for each additional $100 above $300
  • FedEx — the same shape as UPS. FedEx values above $100 are rounded up to the next $100 first

Example with the starting values: a $40 order on USPS pays $2.75; a $150 order on FedEx pays $4.50; a $350 order on UPS pays $5.80 ($4.35 plus $1.45).

How the Carrier Is Chosen

The plugin reads the name of the shipping method the customer selected and looks for USPS, UPS or FedEx as whole words. A method called “USPS Priority” uses the USPS table, “UPS Ground” the UPS table, and “FedEx Home Delivery” the FedEx table. Names that do not mention a carrier, such as “Standard Delivery”, use your default carrier.

If your shipping methods have generic names, rename them so they include the carrier, or choose the default carrier that matches most of your shipments.

What Customers See

In the shipping section of the cart and checkout, customers see “Add shipping insurance” with the price, and “Decline insurance”. Adding it puts a fee line in the totals. If the price is zero, for example UPS under $100 with “No charge” ticked, the choice shows “No charge” and no fee is added. Orders that do not need shipping (such as virtual products), orders with nothing of value to insure, and Local pickup orders do not show the choice, and no fee is added.

Each order stores the choice, the carrier, the declared value and the cost. You will see them in a Shipping insurance box on the admin order screen and as a line in the order emails. When a customer declines, a note is added to the order.

Insured Orders Tab

Every order where the customer was shown the choice is listed, with what they chose. The totals at the top show how many orders were insured and declined, the take-up rate, the insurance fees collected and the declared value insured. Filter by choice, carrier and date, then press Export CSV to download the same list for a spreadsheet; cells that could be read as formulas are neutralised so the file is safe to open. Orders placed before the plugin was installed, and orders that were not offered insurance, are not listed.

The WooCommerce orders list also gets an Insurance column, on both the classic and the High-Performance Order Storage screens.

Cart and Checkout Blocks

The choice appears in the order summary of the Cart and Checkout blocks without editing the page, and in the shipping section of the classic [woocommerce_cart] and [woocommerce_checkout] shortcodes.

On the blocks, a fee is only added once the choice has loaded on the customer’s screen, so nobody is charged for something they were not shown. The same rule means a script that talks to the Store API directly is never charged.

For Developers

Filters and an action let you adjust the result and use it:

ccmssi_declared_value — change the value the insurance is priced on

ccmssi_cost — change the final insurance cost

ccmssi_detect_carrier — decide the carrier yourself from the shipping method id and name

ccmssi_order_insurance_saved — an action that runs when an order’s insurance choice is saved, with the order and its insurance record. It is what the Pro add-on builds on

Troubleshooting

Customers do not see the choice. Confirm the order needs shipping and a shipping method other than Local pickup is chosen, and that the value of the items that ship is inside the range on the Settings tab. It is never offered for virtual-only or free orders.

The wrong carrier is used. Rename the shipping method so it includes USPS, UPS or FedEx, or change the default carrier on the Settings tab.

The price looks wrong. The declared value is the value of the items that ship, before tax and shipping, and FedEx values above $100 are rounded up to the next $100. Check the Carrier Rates tab.
