Optional Shipping Insurance at WooCommerce Checkout

A package arrives damaged or never arrives, and the store eats the cost. Some customers would happily pay a few dollars to avoid that, but WooCommerce has no built-in way to offer it. CCMS Shipping Insurance adds the choice, priced the way you price it.

The problem it solves

Carriers sell coverage for a shipment’s declared value, and the cost grows with that value. Stores that want to pass that cost to the customers who want it usually end up with a hand-built fee: a custom snippet, a fixed amount that is too high for small orders and too low for big ones, or a note in the cart asking people to email for a quote.

CCMS Shipping Insurance replaces that with a Yes/No choice in the shipping section of the cart and checkout, and a fee that follows the value of the order.

How it works

  • The customer sees “Add shipping insurance” with its price, and “Decline insurance”, whenever the order needs shipping, on the Cart and Checkout blocks and on the classic checkout.
  • The plugin reads the carrier from the shipping method they picked — “USPS Priority”, “UPS Ground”, “FedEx Home Delivery” — and prices the insurance from that carrier’s table.
  • The price uses the declared value, the value of the items that ship before tax and shipping. A $40 order on USPS pays $2.75 with the starting values; a $350 order on UPS pays $5.80.
  • Adding it puts a fee line in the totals. Declining shows a short message you can edit, and a note is added to the order.

Every order keeps the choice, the carrier, the declared value and the cost, shown on the admin order screen and in the order emails, so your team knows exactly what was covered.

It does not sell insurance, and the rates are yours

The plugin collects an optional fee. It does not underwrite anything: you buy the coverage from the carrier or a third-party insurer and handle any claim. The rate tables it ships with are examples, not official carrier prices, so set them to what your coverage costs you and update them when your carrier changes its rates.

Insurance is not pre-selected by default, because some regions, including the EU, do not allow a pre-selected paid option. You can switch that on in the settings if it is allowed where you sell.

Blocks, classic checkout and your own pricing

The choice works on the Cart and Checkout blocks and on the classic cart and checkout shortcodes, and you decide where it appears: after the shipping options, above the total, or above Place order. Each carrier can use a rate table, a percentage of the declared value, or a fixed amount, with a minimum and maximum charge, and you can limit it to orders between a minimum value and a maximum insured value.

An Insured Orders screen shows how many customers took the insurance and how much you collected, with filters and a CSV export. If you ship with ShipStation, EasyPost, Shippo or directly with the carriers, the separate Pro add-on uses the same order records to connect to them.

It is compatible with High-Performance Order Storage, and it only loads one small script and stylesheet on the cart and checkout pages.
